Future of AI

Human-centered use of AI

Hello AI Adventurers.

I’ve been making more workflows for AI supported animation, which I’m excited to share with everyone.

Today however, I would like to talk about a different topic.

There has been a lot of talk about the future of AI recently. Over a 1000 people (including Elon Musk, Bill Gates, Y. Bengio, S. Russell, Andrew Yang, Tristan Harris) have called for a temporary pause on training of AI systems exceeding GPT-4.

So why do I want to talk about it?

We humans have a habit of building things without asking too many questions about the consequences. Take social media as an example. A society disrupting and life changing technology, with a bunch of mental and psychological side effects.

Well, AI is even more society disrupting and life changing. The creator and art world has already been shaken by the potential consequences of implementing this technology. And we’re at the very beginning of it. AI is an incredibly powerful technology and the consequences of it’s development can be dire. At the very least we should be aware that it can not only disrupt our society but also destroy it’s existence as we know it.

Seeing people recognize the potential dangers and starting conversations on this topic is incredibly encouraging. We’re having a conversation BEFORE we develop and implement new technologies.

So, what is the answer for this? Should we pause the development of AI systems?

Maybe.

More than that though, we should start changing our thought patterns. AI is powerful, yes, but let’s not forget it is US who brought it to this point. It is us humans that build and develop. It is us who have the choice of how we want our society and lives to look like. AI is powerful. That power can be used for countless reasons, good and bad. And it is us that have the choice on how we will use it.

Being aware of the consequences is the first step. Action is the second. For centuries we have been focused on growth and development. Creating new technologies that allow us to create more, build bigger, move faster. Productivity, efficiency and automation. Humans have been a cog in the machine, governed by a few.

With the power AI offers, I believe we have a unique opportunity to restructure this machine. Automation allows us to create more and more efficiently. As a side effect, it also frees people from their role of being a cog in the machine. We are so used to this structure though, that we end up looking to fit into a new slot inside the machine.

What if we didn’t have to do that? What if we didn’t have to produce more? What if we looked at this automation as an opportunity to reconnect? With ourselves, with our neighbours, with the whole human collective?

What if we would prioritize human progress - emotional, spiritual, intellectual - instead of other gains?

AI is changing how our society works and how we live. We have an opportunity to restructure how we want that to look like.

Do we want to continue expanding the machine of mass production, or do we want to elevate human beings?

I know all of this sounds like a sci-fi utopia. And it is. It might not be as popular an idea as the dystopian futures depicted in Terminator, Blade Runner and other movies. However, both are a very real possibility of where the human race is headed.

Which one would you choose?

I am not the only person thinking about this. If this topic piques your interest, I would recommend you read this article.

If you’ve read this far, I appreciate you taking the time. AI is an enormous topic that is starting to affect every area of our lives. It can be more than just an increase in our productivity.

On that note, I’ll be doing a live workflow walkthrough I used to create this animation.

Come by the AICC server and join the event on Thursday at 13 pm GMT+7.

I’ve also published a new video on a Midjourney style prompt workflow. If you’re into content creation and branding, you would enjoy this.

You can also stop by my website or social media and as always,

Keep creating and don’t forget to have fun. ☀
