Best way to prompt?

Generic vs. Specific prompts

Hello Friend

Welcome to this week’s issue of the AI-Enhanced Creator. Thank you for being a subscriber. 💛

In 2020 an AI model was trained on a dataset of 2,335 molecules, including both FDA-approved drugs and natural compounds known to have antibacterial properties, to help predict which molecules would be effective against the bacterium E. coli. This resulted in identifying Halicin as a successful treatment.

Literally, a life changing technology.

Let’s what it can do for us.

This Weeks Lesson - Generic vs. Specific Prompts

Communication is the interface of AI.

The better we know how to communicate our thoughts and ideas, the better the results with AI will be. The question becomes, how much communication is necessary?

I can say to the AI - make a movie. Or I can say - write a script for a movie.

The difference will be the output.

Simple input like - make a movie - will give simple and generic outputs.

Which is great if we are looking to brainstorm.

simple prompt.

This will lead us into a conversational type prompting. With each output we will get closer to the core of our idea.

we get a broad and generic overview of what we want. we need to go deeper.

we will refine it with every input. A proper conversation that spans over several iterations.

We can keep going deeper with simple questions

It’s our role to filter the information to fit the project we work on.

Our input in this case is very broad. Making a movie is a complex thing. It involves hundreds of people and years to create a high quality movie.

It can hardly be captured in a simple text prompt like - “make a movie.”

A lot goes into it, which is something we need to understand and communicate.

This is where specific prompts come into play.

By developing a specific prompt with details and context, we can better guide the AI towards the information that is relevant to us. Which will allow us to get there quicker and with less iterations.

I like to follow this structure when writing specific prompts:

You are an expert in....

I want you to help me....

These are the requirements...

Take a deep breath and deliver the task step by step.

Fill in as much detail and context as you have.

AI is not all powerful.

It requires plenty of guidance if we want to create meaningful and high quality work.

We are the expert director that needs to guide AI. In return AI will support us with the scale and speed of output it is capable of.

When we write prompts, our goal is to have a good output:

  • For brainstorming having a wide range of information from different fields can introduce ideas we haven’t thought of before - We can adopt simple and conversational prompting

  • On the other hand, when you are developing a script, broad information that includes astronomy, medicine, etc. doesn’t really help us - We can adopt specific and structured prompting.

Dind a balance for each step that will help you create what You most want to create. It all comes down to us and our guidance in the end.

Homework

To practice crafting effective prompts by experimenting with different levels of specificity, I would like you to choose a topic connected to your work.

Here are a few examples:

  • Writing a short story about a character who…

  • Creating a poem about an emotional experience…

  • Designing a logo for a fictional company…

Create both a generic and specific prompt.

Generic prompt:

  • conversational and will help you brainstorm ideas for your topics.

Specific prompt - follow the prompt structure:

  • You are an expert in....

I want you to help me....

    These are the requirements...

Take a deep breath and deliver the task step by step.

For an additional third step - try combining the information from the conversational output into a structured prompt.

Most of all, have fun creating.
